Writing, singing, flying

Opera singing flight attendant

Hi, I am Anna and here is my story. Two years ago I faced a choice: should I continue the journalist career in my beloved New York City or find an occupation that would allow me to pursue my dream and dedicate myself to learn classical singing? For this I needed a lot of time and even more money.

Flight attendant job was always in the back of my head. I can’t say it was my dream job, but it was somehow tempting… even going to the airport was bringing a feeling of an adventure, with all the gates like entrances to the freedom. To travel for work… And the flexibility to spend your life not on working (in the traditional meaning) but on discovering the world… discovering yourself.

That day, Emirates held an open house in Manhattan. I took off from work, wrote my resume, dressed appropriately and left to one of the Midtown hotels. There were hundreds of girls of all origins and nationalities. I was 29 years old then, and I was among the oldest ones. At least that was how I felt. From the screens above the Emirates flight attendants were advertising to their colleagues-to-be, how amazing is to work for the airline. I stood in line to drop off my resume and to introduce myself. “Thank you, today, we will call the candidates we are interested in hiring”. I left the building. I remember I was tired even though it didn’t take me a lot of action. I went to nearby Starbucks. They called me among the first ones inviting me for a face to face interview. There was the only “but”. The condition of hiring was to move to Dubai. I knew I wouldn’t do this. I came from Poland and wanted to pursue my dreams in NYC. Ultimately, I wouldn’t mind relocating, but Dubai was not something I wanted at that time. I kindly said “thank you”.

This experience with Emirates helped me to believe that despite hundreds of thousands of potential candidates, I can still be successful. And you have to be self-confident, especially in America.

To be continued ...
