Love Is in the Air

Love Is in the Air

Doctors and nurses, managers and their assistants, pilots and flight attendants… In eyes of public, these professions belong together. I don’t know how about the other occupations, but being a flight attendant, I can give you a little insight in relations between pilots and flight attendants. What is really happening on the layovers? Are hotel rooms witnessing crazy crew parties and sexual orgies? And do the flight attendants end up marrying pilots?

I am one of them, a flight attendant married to a pilot. To defend myself, we met long before we both started our current careers. We don’t work for the same airline; we don’t even have the same base. And so far, it happened once, that we’d meet at the same layover. What are the advantages of dating or being married to a pilot? First of all, he understands what my job really is about. My husband used to be a flight attendant himself, so he double understands. Disadvantages? We live in an aviation bubble. Also, our schedules are slightly different. We try to bid the same days off, but as we are both junior, it doesn’t always work.

We got used to this lifestyle and it somehow works for us. We don’t care for the weekends off and it’s also easier to travel on our days off. On the other hand, I can’t really imagine how it will be if we decide to have kids. We’ll either have to hire a nanny, or have completely opposite schedules. Unfortunately, we can’t rely on help of our families, as they all live abroad. In general, are flight attendants dating pilots? Not really, most of my friends and colleagues have guys with normal jobs and also pilots have wives mostly from outside the industry.

And how about the affairs and layover adventures? When I started this job, we’d spend the whole trip with the same pilots and we’d all go to the same hotel at the end of the day. That would theoretically give higher chances for deeper interactions between the crewmembers. On the other hand, we are usually tired and want to relax. It didn’t happen often, that we’d go out with others. Also, working for the major airline, our pilots are… slightly older. So, the affairs were possible, but definitely not common.

Lately, our airline decided, that flight attendants won’t be staying with the pilots for the entire trip. The common practice is, that we have different pilots for each flight and even if it happens that we have a layover in the same city, we usually stay in different hotels. Possibility of interactions between pilots and flight attendants is minimal. Most of the airlines do it this way and rumor is, the reason might be to eliminate the affairs between the crewmembers.

The fact is, smaller airlines have younger pilots. So, if you want to turn your pilot into your lover/boyfriend/husband, that’s definitely a place to look for.
